Do I qualify for disability if I have a mental illness?

Did you know that you can apply for social security disability benefits if you have a mental illness and meet the established standards?

If you used to work and cannot any more due to your long term and potentially fatal medical condition you may be able to apply for benefits.

Mental illness, according to the Mayo Clinic, refers to a whole gamut of mental disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. All of these could potentially affect your ability to work which is the main thing on which your application would be evaluated by the Social Security Administration.

If you have one of the following mental disorders, you may qualify for social security disability:

  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders
  • Anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders
  • Substance abuse or other addictive disorders
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Intellectual disability

If you suffer from a mental illness or other mental condition, or have a loved one who does, you know the heroic effort required from time to time to function normally.

If you have a complication in your condition that debilitates you, it can take a long time to recover. If you cannot work for over a year due to it, you may want to consider your options. You should speak with an attorney familiar with the process to help you evaluate your situation to see if you might qualify for social security disability.
