Mistakes to avoid when applying for SSDI benefits

On Behalf of | Apr 30, 2017 | Social Security Disability

When you file for Social Security Disability Insurance, it is likely that your first claim will be denied. This means that you will be forced to appeal the decision and jump through additional hoops to get the benefits you need. The appeal process can take up to two years, extending the time between your initial claim and when you get your first payment.

To speed up the process, there are a few mistakes you should do your best to avoid.

Underestimating or exaggerating your condition

Never underestimate how much your disability affects your everyday life. You may have lived with it and gotten used to it over the years, but it still places limits on what you can do each day.

On the opposite side, never exaggerate your condition. For example, if you can walk around each day without a walker, do not use a walker when you are at a hearing, because this can be seen as an exaggeration of your condition.

Starting uneducated

You may think that getting SSDI benefits is a simple process that just involves a quick application and short wait for a check. The reality is that the Social Security Administration has a strict checklist of guidelines you must meet before you are even considered for benefits. If you are unaware of the criteria, you cannot claim to meet it.

Handling the process alone

Currently, there are over three million people caught somewhere in the process of obtaining disability benefits. Applying for, appealing and finally receiving your SSDI benefits can be an extremely frustrating, complex process that lasts for years. If you go it alone without the help of an experienced professional, it is easy to give up when it gets too hard.

If you need to file for SSDI or appeal your initial decision, we encourage you to do so with an advocate in your corner. Speak to a qualified attorney today about your situation.
