When will I receive my disability payment?

On Behalf of | Sep 4, 2014 | Social Security Disability

If you have made it through the process of applying for Social Security disability benefits, and have been approved, you likely have a great weight of worry lifted off of your shoulders. However, the main point of applying for benefits is to get them; and it can be nerve wracking waiting for them to begin. So many people have the question: when am I supposed to get my first check?

According to the Social Security Administration, benefit payments are paid in the month after the month they become due. So if your benefits are due in September, you will receive payment for them in October.

As for what day you will receive payment, that depends on what day of the month your birthday is. For example, if your birthday is between the 1st and the 10th of the month, the payment will be on the second Wednesday of the month. If you are born between the 11th and the 20th day of the month, you will be paid on the third Wednesday of the month. For those born after the 20th day of the month, the payment will be received on the fourth Wednesday.

Of course, the newest Social Security disability payment recipients may not receive a paper check. Instead, disability payments are made electronically via direct deposit, of through the Direct Express card issued by the SSA.
