What is Social Security Income?
Social Security income (SSI) provides needs-based financial assistance to individuals with minimal income or financial resources. The SSA administers SSI. However, qualifying for SSI differs from Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and does not require you to have worked, paid FICA taxes, and earned work credits.
Getting SSI may also qualify you for additional assistance from the state or county. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offers assistance for buying food. You may also qualify for Medicaid to pay medical bills if you are eligible for SSI.
How Does Someone Become Eligible for Social Security Income?
Adults and children may receive SSI when their financial resources are below certain limits. You or someone you care for may be eligible for SSI benefits when meeting the following criteria:
- You are 65 or older,
- Blind,
- Or have a medical condition that prevents you from securing and performing gainful employment, and
- The condition will last one year or longer, or result in death
Your income earnings must be minimal. The value of an individual’s assets must be $2,000 or less, excluding a home and the land they own, life insurance policies valued at $1500 or less, a car’s value, and burial plots and funds up to a specific amount. A couple must have assets worth less than $3,000combined to apply for SSI.
Children with a disability or blindness may also qualify for SSI when their parents experience low income. Excluding student wages and scholarships may be possible when determining eligibility for SSI.
You may be eligible for SSI in certain instances if you are a noncitizen, live in a public-operated community residence or public institution for educational or job training, or you live in a shelter for the unhoused. You may be eligible for limited SSI if Medicaid pays for more than half the cost of living in a public or private institution. A felony or arrest warrants may disqualify you from receiving SSI.
