Knowing the basics of Social Security disability benefits

Sometimes knowing the basics of Social Security disability benefits can make petitioning for such benefits a bit easier. Because of this, we find it helpful to answer some basic questions about the definition of disability, why it is important to apply for disability benefits, and what the average award is.

How is the term “disability” defined? – Essentially, a person is considered disabled and eligible for benefits if he or she is dealing with a severe medical condition that has lasted (or is expected to last) at least 12 months. The condition must prevent the person from doing their previous job and must prevent them from moving to another position. While these are broad based terms, the Social Security Administration defines disability very strictly.

You never know when you will get hurt – Because life is so unpredictable (even when a person is healthy) it is helpful to know where you are going and how you will be supported if you become injured unexpectedly. When you cannot work, and when workers’ compensation or a legal settlement has not been realized, Social Security disability benefit can help you maintain a standard living.

How much will I get each month? – Of course, the amount you receive each month will depend on a number of factors, including your age, the number of years you may have worked, and whether you are able to work part time. Even with these factors, the average monthly disability payment in 2014 is $1,146.

If you have additional questions about obtaining Social Security disability benefits, an experienced attorney can help.
