An Honest, Clear Voice In SSI/SSDI Care

The Disability Benefit Programs

The Social Security Administration (SSA) pays benefits through separate and distinct programs. If you are disabled, you may be eligible to receive benefits under at least one of these programs. All disability programs require that the person must be disabled for at least 12 continuous months or that the impairment will result in death.

Which Benefits Do You Qualify For?

Although the SSDI and SSI programs are different in many ways, only people who have a qualified disability or satisfy certain medical criteria qualify for benefits under either program.

  • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) pays benefits to those who are disabled and “insured,” meaning they worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) pays benefits based on a person’s financial need, irrespective of their work history, to those who are 65 or older, blind or disabled. Additionally disabled children from families with limited financial resources may qualify.
  • Widow or widowers benefits based upon the work record of your deceased spouse. This benefit is available to persons between the ages of 50 and 60 who are disabled and the disability began within seven years of the spouse’s death or to persons who are over 60 years of age.
  • Adult disabled children’s benefits are available for individuals who had a disability prior to the age of 22 and they have a parent who is deceased or who is receiving disability or retirement benefits through Social Security.

When you apply for either program, the SSA will review your medical and financial history and determine whether you satisfy their narrow definition of “disabled” under any of these programs.
