The Social Security Administration (SSA) has created a specific definition of disability. To be considered a disability, an impairment must prevent a person from working. It must also be expected to last at least a year or to result in death. One of the most common reasons for a claim to be denied is because it does not meet the Social Security definition of a disability.

The Social Security Administration’s Listing Of Impairments

The SSA has created a listing of impairments. In the listing, impairments are broken down into 14 groups, including musculoskeletal system disorders, respiratory system disorders, cardiovascular system disorders and mental disorders. There are also many other qualifying conditions.

Just because a medical condition appears in the listing does not mean that benefits are automatic. Claims are often denied simply because the documentation submitted does not clearly indicate that the listing is met. These rules are very specific and require clear and substantial documentation.
